    Week 1: August 29-September 1, 2022

    This week we will cover the following:

    • Review of the syllabus
    • Distribute work folders
    • Getting to know the class activities
    • Review expectations for class and skills of social studies
    • Review technology that will be used including apps that enable students to edit documents, as well as an overview of Canvas
    • We will also begin by exploring geography's role in the development of civilization.  Topics include the study of the continents, Pangea, the Five Themes of Geography, the seasons, and map skills such as map projections, longitude and latitude.
    • *Our class will also be making a cross-curricular connection on the first day of school.  Weather permitting, we will be watching the Artemis 1 moon rocket launch from Cape Canaveral.  This is the first step to getting America back to the Moon.  Launch time is anticipated to be 8:33 AM ET.

     

    Week 2: September 6-9, 2022

    This week we will cover the following:

    • Biomes/Climates of the world
    • Students will create their ideal country.  Cultural topics like the economy, social aspects, and types of government.  We also talked about things like country flags, holidays, and education.
    • We will learn about what causes the seasons by watching an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy.
    • We will discuss the Continental Drift Theory and how that impacted human migration patterns.

     

    Week 3: September 12-16, 2022

    This week we will cover the following:

    • As a conclusion to learning about the Five Themes of Geography, students will be creating postcards and cartoons that describe these characteristics.
    • We will discuss how map projections distort certain landmasses.
    • We will discuss the migration patterns of early humans and how leadership roles were established in hunter-gatherer societies.
    • Students will be introduced to some of the major disciplines within social studies including geographers, historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists.
    • Finally, students will play an interactive game to learn about some of the tools archaeologists use at dig sites.
